As longtime readers know, we normally do an annual reader survey in March. But the thing is, in March I was secretly, uh, unpleasantly ill (early pregnancyâ€"it’s as fun as they say). So it didn’t happen. But we wanted to make the survey happened by the end of the year (so I could show the results to the baby, who’s obviously going to be really into data), and here we are. This year we took a slightly different approach to the survey. We realized that we wanted responses from as wide a range of readers as possible, not just the 1,000 of you that read the site first thing in the morning and who have historically maxed out the survey in four hours or less (though, for you guys, two ice creams, we love you). To make that happen we made this year’s survey more data driven (versus the more open-ended survey of years’ past), which allows us to open it up to unlimited responses over the course of several days. So please, read the survey, let us know how you use the site, and we’ll do our very best to make it better for you.
Also, a special appeal to lurkers. The reality is less than 1% of readers of the site are regular commenters. Interesting right? This has been the case since day one, which I find fascinating. And the number of readers who send us emails is such a microscopically small percentage of you that I can’t even calculate it (thank you for your emails, they are lovely). So it’s easy for us to build the content of the site around a teeny tiny handfull of voices that we hear very loudly. When in reality? We want to know more about all of you. So if just reading posts is your bag, and you never even go into the comments? If you’re an RSS only kind of girl? If you swing by the site twice a week to check things out? If you’ve never left a comment anywhere in your life? PLEASE fill out the survey. I promise it will be super easy to complete, and that we really care who you are, and what you think.
And yes. We’ll work on creating some pretty info graphics to share with you, just like the last two years. (If anyone out there wants to volunteer to play with info graphics this year, let us know. We’ll get you ALL the ice creams. Even the special staff bourbon and cornflakes ice cream.)
